Exploring Costa Rica: A Memorable Journey Through Nature and Adventure
Arrival in San Jose
Landed at San Jose Airport, I quickly rented a car and set off on my adventure. The anticipation of exploring Costa Rica was palpable, and my first stop was La Fortuna, a quaint town nestled near the Arenal Volcano.

I checked into an amazing Airbnb in El Castillo, hosted by Jay, who had a charming little farm. The serenity of the surroundings was mesmerizing. One of the highlights was hiking the local volcano trail, which offered jaw-dropping views of the iconic Arenal Volcano.

During my stay, I made it a point to visit the famous hand statue, where the panoramic view left me breathless. A relaxing escape was at the Tabacón Spa, known for its thermal springs, and I also indulged in a luxurious day at The Springs Resort & Spa.
A Disappointing Stop: Monteverde
After La Fortuna, I headed to Monteverde, a name that had been highly recommended by friends. However, the visit to this national park turned out to be somewhat disappointing, perhaps due to the high expectations I had set.
Coastal Adventure in Santa Teresa
The journey continued as I drove to Santa Teresa, renowned for its stunning beaches and surf culture. My accommodation was a luxurious Airbnb, although it was tucked behind a rather rough road. Santa Teresa felt like an emerging hotspot with plenty of opportunities for relaxation and adventure.
During my three-day stay, I explored breathtaking local beaches such as Playa Santa Teresa and Playa Hermosa. I also enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere of local cafes and shops, soaking in the laid-back vibe that this surf town offers.

Manuel Antonio: Nature’s Playground
Next, I traveled to Paquera and then to Puntarenas before arriving at my Airbnb in Manuel Antonio. This area is famous for its national park and pristine beaches. The following day was dedicated to exploring Manuel Antonio National Park, where I was greeted by breathtaking views and friendly monkeys swinging through the trees. The highlight was spotting sloths, a dream since childhood!
Final Destination: Uvita
The final leg of my journey took me to Uvita, where I stayed at the remarkable La Cusinga, an eco-friendly hotel surrounded by tropical forest teeming with wildlife. Breakfast was a delight, as I finally spotted a toucan, a sight I had longed for.
It had also its private beach! Truly hidden gem!
The nearby Playa Hermosa was perfect for relaxation, and I was even able to enjoy the Envision Festival from the beachside.

I also visited Nauyaca Waterfalls, which truly amazed me. There, I saw what I believe to be the most beautiful waterfall I've ever encountered in my life
Unexpected Adventures and Fun Facts
Throughout my journey, there were plenty of amusing and challenging moments. Every meal was fresh and delicious, and I was continually surprised by the variety of wildlife I encountered—from playful monkeys to quirky squirrel-like creatures.
Venturing down the alligator trail to find a secluded beach was thrilling, albeit a bit scary! There were numerous times I felt we might be in for an adventure on the roads, sometimes feeling uneasy about the car’s condition as we navigated the rugged terrain. Don't forget to double the time you see in your Google Maps between the destination points!
Unexpectedly, on the way back to the airport, the car broke down just an hour from our destination, leading to a comical tow experience. Along the way, I met an artistic older couple at La Cusinga, which sparked nostalgic conversations about future retirement adventures.
Despite carefully budgeting, I found Costa Rica to be pricier than anticipated. Being aware of the local wildlife, especially the more dangerous species, would have helped ease some of my anxiety.
Future Adventures in Costa Rica
This trip truly whetted my appetite for adventure, and there is still so much more to explore. Future plans include visiting the:
- Parque Nacional Rincón de la Vieja - to catch a glimpse of elusive leopards
- soaking up the hippie surf culture in Tamarindo
- taking a crocodile river tour with José
- Horseback riding on the beach
- exploring Parque Nacional Carara
- and seeking more thrilling experiences like bioluminescence plankton spotting during night kayaks are also on my list
- Moreover, the Irazú Volcano National Park holds the promise of unforgettable views
- and I look forward to climbing down to Catarata Vuelta del Canon, San Carlos Alajuela, Marsella De Venecia San Carlos and Siquirres Limon for some of the best waterfall & canyon pictures ever.

Costa Rica is a remarkable destination that blends breathtaking nature, rich culture, and thrilling adventures. Although I barely scratched the surface in one week, the memories and experiences captured my heart, and I look forward to returning to discover even more of its wonders. Whether it’s the exhilarating wildlife, the stunning beaches, or the friendly locals, Costa Rica beckons travelers from all around the globe to its pristine shores.
